A correctional deputy at San Luis Obispo County Jail was attacked Monday by an inmate wielding a razor blade.

According to sheriff's spokesman Tony Cipolla, an Atascadero State Hospital patient being held in the jail, Jimmy Scota Martinez, refused to come out of his cell when ordered to do so and instead barricaded himself in the unit.

"During this time, Martinez continued to make verbal threats to deputies," Cipolla said. A group of deputies then attempted to remove Martinez, and used pepper balls and a taser to force him to come out.

"Martinez actively resisted and used a weapon against one of the deputies," Cipolla said. "That weapon was later identified as a razor blade."

One deputy sustained injuries and needed medical treatment; the deputy was not identified by Cipolla and the extent of the wounds was not explained in a news release.

The deputies were able to subdue Martinez and remove him from his cell, Cipolla said. A charge of assault with a deadly weapon will be sought against Martinez, Cipolla said.

Martinez was transferred from ASH to the County Jail in August 2011. He is awaiting trial on charges of felony assault with a deadly weapon and felony battery with serious bodily injury.
