Letter: Identity cards needed

Published: July 29, 2012

Regarding the pro/con article discussing the endless debate about illegal immigration: Trying to seal our borders is the wrong way to stop illegal immigrants. It’s kind of like swatting flies at an open picnic table. You can’t stop them from getting to the table, so you have to cover the food! In other words, once they get here, our nation must keep illegal immigrants from having access to basic necessities of life like food, gas and shelter.

I believe our nation must quickly implement a secure national identity card, and require everyone to have this card before they can get food, gas and services like health care. We could probably use existing credit card readers to scan the cards.

In fact, a similar system is currently being used by one of the nation’s largest retailers to verify that those who buy gas are actually entitled to do so. First you insert your membership card, and then you insert your credit card to get gas. No membership, no gas! And the clerk would have no choice in the matter. The computer would make the decision.

Help implement the policy of secure identity cards for daily transactions. That will stop illegal immigration!
