Letter: Guns of the time

Published: July 29, 2012

During the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin suggested that the Continental Army use the bow and arrow because it was a more effective weapon than the front-loading ball-and-ram-rod guns of that time.

It was to these guns that the founding fathers were referring when they wrote the right to bear arms into the Constitution.

Tell me what those guns have in common with the current-day automatic assault weapons? When the arms manufacturers produce a gun that can wipe out a city block with one shot, will it still be everyone’s right to have one?
