Correction: An earlier version of this story misspelled the name of Joseph Scott Scheurn, who was killed in the crash.
UPDATE 6 p.m.: Authorities on Tuesday identified the man killed in a traffic collision east of Santa Maria as Joseph Scott Scheurn, 32, of Santa Maria.
His 1985 Honda Accord was struck late Monday afternoon by a 2008 Cadillac Escalade driven by Laura Maldonado, the 44-year-old wife of congressional candidate Abel Maldonado.
Laura Maldonado was headed east on Foxen Canyon Road when Scheurn was going north on Dominion Road. For unknown reasons, he proceeded through a stop sign and drove into the path of her SUV. The Honda was struck on the driver's side by the Cadillac.
Laura Maldonado was not cited. The CHP said it was not yet known whether alcohol or drug use were contributing factors. The investigation is ongoing, pending completion of toxicology reports.
Original story: An SUV driven by congressional candidate Abel Maldonados wife struck a car, killing the driver, after he ran a stop sign east of Santa Maria about 4:10 p.m. Monday, the CHP reported.
Laura Maldonado, 44, and her teenage son suffered minor injuries, the CHP said. They were taken by private vehicle to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria for a precautionary examination. They have since been released and are at home doing as well as can be expected, said Kurt Bardella, a spokesman for Abel Maldonado.
A 30-year-old man was driving a 1985 Honda Accord north on Dominion Road, the CHP said, and Maldonado was driving about 55 mph east on Foxen Canyon Road in a 2008 Cadillac Escalade.
The Honda did not stop at a stop sign at the intersection and was struck on the front left by the Cadillac, the CHP said. Both vehicles ended up in an irrigation canal on the north side of Foxen Canyon Road.
The driver of the Honda died at the scene. He was not immediately identified.
Our deepest condolences and sympathies are with the family of the victim, Abel Maldonado said in a statement issued late Monday. There are no words that can lift the burden of grief and sorrow his family and friends are experiencing right now. ... The thoughts and prayers of our entire family are with his family and friends.
