Area Roundup: San Luis Obispo Rattlers fall to Conejo Oaks

Published: July 18, 2012

Charlie Sharrer was 2 for 4 with a double, and starter Levi Shordon pitched into the seventh inning, but that’s when it all fell apart for the San Luis Obispo Rattlers.

Avoiding a two-game summer collegiate baseball sweep, the Conejo Oaks had a five-run rally in the seventh and went on to a 9-4 win at Cal Lutheran’s Sparky Anderson Field on Wednesday.

Shordon struck out seven in 6 1⁄3 innings but walked four and was tagged with five runs, four earned, before the bullpen coughed up four more. “The score didn’t reflect the outing that he pitched,” Rattlers manager Aaron Levin said. “He got a lot of balls that were off the handle or off the end of the bat. They didn’t really hit the ball hard at all. He pitched a great game.”

Sharrer was the only Rattlers player with multiple hits, but Stephen Takahashi was 1 for 4 with a triple and an RBI for San Luis Obispo (30-15).

Nipomo's Wilenius to get college water polo shot

Recent Nipomo High graduate Kirk Wilenius has been recruited to play goalie for the Loyola Marymount University men’s water polo team, according to his father, Kim.

A four-year Nipomo goalie, Wilenius earned CIF-Southern Section Division 7 first-team honors. He helped the Titans to the Los Padres League title and a division semifinal appearance in the 2011-12 season.

Wilenius also played volleyball and basketball at Nipomo.
