Letter: Healthy Suggestions

Published: July 18, 2012

Mitt Romney’s campaign has been criticized because it has not emphasized alternatives to “Obamacare” or the high cost of health care.

May I suggest:

• Require medical providers to post the range of costs for common tests and procedures.

• Allow individuals and businesses to shop for health insurance nationally instead of just locally.

• Promote Health Savings Accounts under which employees are given a set amount of money per year for medical expenses (which can be carried over to future years if not spent).

• Limit the value of awards in malpractice suits. Most of us could live comfortably on the insurance premiums many health providers have to pay (even after they have quit practicing medicine!).

Some of these ideas would, of course, be resisted by certain groups, but they would transform us into knowledgeable consumers in an efficiently functioning system.
