Letter: On sleeping in cars

Published: July 16, 2012

I do not understand the intentions of the San Luis Obispo City Council members by once again passing laws to ticket homeless individuals who sleep in their cars. Are they supposed to leave the city and park in the county? Is that legal?

If someone is so down and out that they are forced to live out of their car, why would you give them more grief and a ticket they cannot afford to pay? Where is your empathy?

Is there no way the city can find an area that will work for these homeless individuals to park their cars and perhaps have access to public restrooms? As I understand the article that was in the newspaper, some of these individuals are veterans. So have we become such a mean and uncaring country that we would not allow an American veteran to sleep undisturbed in his car when he does not have a home? I thought San Luis Obispo was going after the “happiest city” award; how can you do that and yet punish people who really need help?

I think the judge made the correct ruling. Why are you spending money to go around it and create more problems? How about a positive solution?
