A 20-year-old Cambria man died and another man was arrested on felony charges after an all-terrain vehicle went off San Simeon Creek Road before dawn Sunday.
Passenger Justin Anthony Evans, 20, died of blunt force trauma when the ATV, driven by Garrett John Taylor, 27, ran head-on into an oak tree about 4 a.m., according to a CHP report.
Taylor was driving west near Red Mountain Road on a 2007 Yamaha Rhino, a two-seat vehicle he had taken without permission of the owner, when he rounded a curve and drifted onto the shoulder and into the tree, the report says.
Taylor was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo with head trauma and injuries to the abdomen, according to the CHP. He remained in serious condition Sunday evening, according to Ron Yukelson, a hospital spokesman.
The CHP said alcohol was a causative factor in the accident and that Taylor would be charged with felony driving under the influence and vehicle theft.
