Sweet freaks, beware: Two new dessert establishments have recently opened on the same block of Broad Street between Higuera and Marsh streets.
One is Batch, which offers made-to-order ice cream sandwiches, with the customer selecting a combination of flavor of ice cream and fresh-baked cookies. Across the street is Sugar Daddys Bake Shop, which offers a wide array of baked goods, including wedding and other special-occasion cakes.
Batch is owned by sisters Tami Becker of Oakland and Wendle Schoniger of San Luis Obispo. The interior was designed by Beckers daughter, Marki Becker, a Cal Poly architecture student. Schoniger declined to say how much the sisters have invested in the business, which will be open daily, with late hours until 2:30 a.m. on weekends.
Sugar Daddys is owned by siblings Chris and Brenda Susca. The shop has five part-time employees, and all pastries are made on site. Brenda Susca also owns First Class Cakes in Los Angeles, Chris Susca said. He has relocated to San Luis Obispo, while his sister maintains the Los Angeles business. Chris Susca didnt divulge how much they have invested in Sugar Daddys, which will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 or 9 p.m.
When asked whether he was worried about dessert competition across the street, Chris Susca said hes neutral on the situation because Batchs cold treats are a different product from the high-end pastries and wedding cakes that Sugar Daddys creates. Schoniger of Batch was enthusiastic about the cluster of sweet shops on the block, saying that she has heard students call it the street of dreams.
