Clerks cited for selling tobacco to minors at 11 stores around SLO County

Published: July 11, 2012

Eleven stores in the unincorporated areas of San Luis Obispo County were recently cited for selling tobacco to minors during a sting operation by the San Luis Obispo County Health Agency’s Tobacco Control Program and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Three underage decoys visited 52 stores selling tobacco in San Miguel, Santa Margarita, Cambria, Cayucos, Los Osos, Avila Beach, Oceano, Nipomo and other parts of the county. Cities did not participate in the sting operation.

Of the eleven clerks cited for unlawful sales of tobacco products to a minor, only one clerk did not ask the minor for identification prior to completing the sale.

The following stores were cited:

  • Avila Mercantile & Grocery in Avila Beach
  • Bob & Jan’s Bottle Shop in Cambria
  • Old Cambria Market Place
  • Paul’s Liquor in Cayucos
  • Ralphs in Los Osos
  • CVS Pharmacy in Nipomo
  • La Placita Market in Nipomo
  • Vons in Nipomo
  • Super Carniceria La Chiquita in Nipomo
  • Margarita Mercantile in Santa Margarita
  • San Simeon Mini Mart
