Exterior improvements to the future home of the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum are nearly complete, and soon the nonprofit organization will lead efforts to finish the inside to display and preserve railroad history of the Central Coast and California.

The city, which owns the Freighthouse, has spent about $750,000 in mostly grant funds over the past seven years to stabilize the building, put in a new foundation, make the building accessible and repair the roof.

According to the nonprofit group’s website, the 5,000-square-foot building is to include an archive, a general use area for mobile displays, a 13-foot model railroad and a main hall for artifacts, displays and photographs.

The group also plans to display artwork of the four main railroad companies that have served San Luis Obispo County: the Pacific Coast Railway, the Southern Pacific, Amtrak and the Union Pacific.
