The most pristine coastal view along Highway 1 in our area, the section between North Morro Bay and South Cayucos, is proposed to be sacrificed for a $250,000 grant for a bike path. This path is 12 feet wide and paved with barriers on both sides, three span bridges and retaining walls. I have studied the environmental impact report. The west side of Highway 1 was determined to be the most harmful to the environmental resources of the choices. The east side of Highway 1 and the right of way are other choices.
There are few vistas this beautiful left in their natural state.
The paved path/road would cut right through the white fluffy dunes inside the Toro Creek gate. The path has only one opening in this section. It was designed as an elite bicycle freeway with north and south lanes.
Preserving the extreme beauty of the natural resources we are blessed with should be put before the narrow interests of bicyclists and the Bike Coalition. Once paved over, never again. As Joni Mitchell sang, They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.
Please protest and attend the upcoming hearings. Contact seabaptiste@sbcglobal.net.
