UPDATE 3:10 p.m. Friday: The DUI checkpoint operated by San Luis Obispo police Thursday night resulted in three people being arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Police said a total of 1,200 cars went through the checkpoint, with 700 pulled over for screening. The checkpoint was conducted in the 500 block of Santa Rosa Street, between Walnut and Olive streets, from 8 p.m. Thursday and 2:30 a.m. Friday.

One person was cited for having a suspended driver's license. Eleven people were cited for being unlicensed drivers.

UPDATE 6 p.m. Thursday: The DUI checkpoint being held by San Luis Obispo police tonight will be in the 500 block of Santa Rosa Street, between Walnut and Olive streets.

Officers will check for drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs, and will also check to see if drivers have valid licenses.

Original story: San Luis Obispo police will set up a checkpoint Thursday night to make sure drivers are properly licensed and not intoxicated or otherwise under the influence.

A police news release says the checkpoint will be set up from 8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Friday. The location is undisclosed.

The purpose is to promote safety, increase awareness of dangers involved with drinking and driving, and deter impaired or unlicensed drivers.
