The man shot and killed by a Santa Barbara County sheriffs deputy after ramming a patrol car Monday afternoon on Highway 101 south of Buellton has been identified as Matthew Lyell Berg, 47, of Santa Maria.
The shooting occurred at approximately 1 p.m. According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriffs Department, a woman called 911 shortly before that from her home on Highway 154 in the Santa Ynez Valley to report a possible break-in.
Responding officers saw an adult male leave the residence and drive away in a small green car. The man drove to Highway 101, where, after a chase, he stopped on the bridge over the Santa Ynez River.
He rammed a pursuing patrol car, and the deputy fired multiple shots, striking the suspect, who died at the scene, according to the police report.
No members of law enforcement or the public were injured in the incident. The southbound lanes of Highway 101 remained closed for hours.
