Former Cal Poly star Sharon Day is in second place after the first day of the heptathlon at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Day completed the first four events of the seven-event heptathlon today with 3,797 points. Hyleas Fountain, the 2008 Olympic silver medalist, is the leader with 3,948 points. Chantae McMillan is in third place with 3,762 points, and UC Santa Barbara's Barbara Nwaba is in fourth with 3,736 points.

Day made the 2008 Olympic team in the high jump. In 2009, she qualified for the world championships in the high jump and heptathlon, and last year again qualified for the world championships in the heptathlon as the U.S. champion.

Day tied Fountain and Nwaba for the top mark in the high jump today at 6 feet, 1 1/2 inches. Day also ran the 100 hurdles in 13.71 seconds, just off her personal record of 13.57, threw the shot put 43-11 3/4 and concluded the day with a PR of 24.26 in the 200.

The top three finishers after Saturday's second day of the heptathlon will move on to the London Olympics, provided they have reached the A qualifying standard of 6,150 points, which Day already has done this season.

Former Mission Prep star and Oregon junior Jordan Hasay will be running in the semifinals of the women's 1,500 later this afternoon at the trials, seeking a spot in Sunday's final.
