In response to Joe Laraneta’s June 18 letter “No special treatment”:

What counterpart is there in the private sector that compares to police and firemen?

Would Mr. Laraneta risk his life every day and for minimum wage? How safe would he feel if he calls the police and a McDonald’s burger flipper responded?

Our police and firemen are underpaid and overworked, always in unsafe, dangerous conditions. Until you’ve walked in their shoes and lived their lives, shut up about what they’re paid. It’s never enough.
