Students in the San Luis Coastal Unified School District will return in the fall to many familiar faces, but also some new ones.

Principals at two of the district’s 10 elementary schools and at Pacific Beach High are changing.

Jennifer Dinielli will lead Baywood Elementary School in Los Osos.

She replaces Doug Jenison, who retired in June after 13 years as the principal of that school and 20 years with the district.

Dinielli has been with the district since 2006 and previously worked as a teacher on special assignment for special education and intervention.

She was given the Golden Apple Award, a special educator award, in 2007-08 for her accomplishment teaching a special day class at Baywood.

Jeff Martin will head Sinsheimer Elementary School in San Luis Obispo. He replaces Joyce Hunter, who retired after 10 years as principal at the school and 28 total years with San Luis Coastal.

Martin comes to San Luis Obispo from the Lucia Mar Unified School District, where he was principal for a year at Grover Heights Elementary School and 10 years at Mesa Middle School. Martin is no stranger to San Luis Coastal; he attended schools in the district from kindergarten through high school.

Chris Dowler will take the helm at Pacific Beach High in San Luis Obispo. Former Principal Greg Halfman retired after 27 years with the school district; his posts included principal at Morro Bay High School and principal of adult education.

Dowler, who led Pacific Beach during the 2010-11 school year, will also continue to serve as the district’s deputy director of student support services.

A total of 62 people retired from San Luis Coastal this year, in part because of an early retirement incentive offered as a way to reduce payroll costs.

In all, 16 non-teaching staff and 46 teachers retired.

Elementary schools are the most affected. Many of the retiring teachers will be replaced with new, less experienced teachers.

San Luis Coastal, with 7,200 students enrolled in preschool through 12th grade, is the county’s second-largest district and has a $72 million general fund.
