Officers arrested a drunken wrong-way driver who traveled north along Highway 101s southbound lanes from Santa Maria to nearly Arroyo Grande early Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Ramon J. Ramos, 21, of Nipomo was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of drunken driving after a CHP officer used his car to block the highways southbound lanes just south of El Campo Road between Arroyo Grande and Nipomo about 4:40 a.m. according to a news release from the agency.
Ramos stopped his 2008 Nissan Rogue as he approached the CHP car. An officer estimated he had been traveling north about 70 mph in the highways southbound No. 1 lane, the CHP said.
Several people had called the CHP to report a speeding, wrong-way driver as far south as Santa Maria, the agency said.
Ramos was no longer in custody as of Sunday afternoon, according to jail records.
