Soul and funk band J.J. Grey and Mofro, along with local acts the Damon Castillo Band and The Kicks, will be featured in a free summer concert at the Avila Beach Golf Resort on Sunday.
The band Citizen Cope was initially going to headline the concert but had to cancel due to scheduling conflicts. So promoter Bruce Howard kept the other acts and made it a free concert.
J.J. Grey, a guitarist from North Florida, is an Alligator Records act, influenced by Otis Redding, Toots Hibbert and fellow Floridians Lynyrd Skynyrd. He has performed at Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and the Montreal Jazz Festival.
The Damon Castillo Band has been around San Luis Obispo County for several years and is led by Castillo, a Berklee College of Music grad who scored a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music in 2005. The jazzy, funky jam band started out in the late '90s as JND.
Also performing is The Kicks, a reggae band from the Central Coast fronted by Reese Galido, who studied classical piano for 12 years.
While it is an all-ages concert, alcohol will be available to those 21 and up. The show begins at noon.
