Former Cal Poly mens basketball player Amaurys Fermin has been named to the Dominican Republic national team that will attempt to qualify for the Summer Olympics in London.
The Dominican Republic will play in the 12-nation FIBA World Qualifying Tournament on July 2-8 in Caracas, Venezuela, trying to secure one of the three final spots in the Olympics.
The Dominican Republic will be in a three-group tier with Russia and South Korea at the qualifying tournament. The top two teams in that tier will advance to the quarterfinals. The tournament champion, runner-up and third-place finisher will qualify for the Olympics.
Fermin, a native of Bronx, N.Y., who has dual U.S. and Dominican citizenship, recently graduated from Cal Poly with a history degree. He played one season at Cal Poly, starting all 33 games this past season and finishing second in the Big West Conference in assists with 3.61 per game.
The Dominican Republic team will be coached Kentuckys John Calipari. Among other players on the team are Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford and Sacramento Kings guard Francisco Garcia.
