SLO Brew plans to move to new location downtown

Published: June 13, 2012

SLO Brewing Co. is hoping to relocate from Garden Street to 736-738 Higuera St., the former location of Central Coast Surfboards, to make way for the Garden Street Terraces project.

Much of the brewery, restaurant and music venue would stay the same, but the new site, which is next to the Frog and Peach Pub, is proposed to include amenities such as a creekside patio and a rooftop patio for dining.

As envisioned, the ground floor will include a dining area and brewery, the second floor an 800-square-foot stage for live entertainment and a banquet area, and the rooftop patio a dining area with a small bar.

The business will gain 4,000 square feet at the new location, which will be used to expand the brewing capacity and kitchen area, said Hamish Marshall, vice president of WestPac Investments, which owns the business.

Marshall said he hopes to begin improvements to the Higuera Street building, including a seismic retrofit, by April. He declined to disclose how much money was being spent on the upgrades. A clothing store called Francie will have to relocate. Marshall said that lease expires in April.

The San Luis Obispo Planning Commission on July 11 will consider the use permit for moving the business to the new location.

SLO Brewing has been at 1119 Garden St. since 1988 in the historic Union Hardware and Plumbing Co. building. That site is scheduled to become a restaurant and bar for a hotel approved as part of the mixed-use Garden Street Terraces project. Construction on that project is expected to begin at the end of 2013 and take about 18 months to complete.
