Pass the word: San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson can be bought.

But the payoff here isn’t part of some nefarious criminal scheme — this payoff will help kids go to YMCA summer camp.

An afternoon with Parkinson will be auctioned off by retired Undersheriff Martin Basti at a fundraising event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rabobank, 1070 Main St., Cambria.

The winning bidder will be able to spend an afternoon with Parkinson, including a tour of the sheriff’s facility (including the jail, shooting range and communication center); a viewing of specialized vehicles, including the SWAT armored car and command vehicle; and the opportunity to experience realistic shooting scenarios in the sheriff’s shooting simulation trailer.

Silent auctions will be offered as well, including: a patrol ride-along with Senior Deputy Todd Steeb of Cambria; Three Sisters cuvée wines donated by Hearst Ranch Winery; a light-weight alloy, Shimano-equipped, 21-speed Genesis Ground Force V-2100 Mountain Bike donated by the Sheriff’s Office; and an original wood artwork made specially for the event by Brooks Lawrence of the Brooks Gallery in San Simeon.

Appetizers donated by local residents will be served.

Renee Samaniego-Lundy is leading the campaign to send 26 children from 15 San Simeon and Cambria families to the camp held at Cambria Grammar School. For details, call 550-8464 or email rlundy@aptwater.com.
