Financial incentives for conservation programs will be a focus of a seminar Thursday held by the Independent Grape Growers of the Paso Robles Area.

Titled “Going and Getting Green,” the event will feature two speakers from 3 to 5 p.m. at J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, 6169 Airport Road in Paso Robles.

Margy Lindquist, district conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service, will talk about financial incentives the U.S. Department of Agriculture offers to ranchers and farmers for conservation programs to improve soil, water and wildlife habitats.

“We can help them decide which programs are best for them,” said Lindquist, who is based in Templeton. “We can talk with them. We can make a visit out to their farm or ranch.”

While Thursday’s event is geared toward grape growers, Lindquist said conservation and stewardship incentives are also granted to those with ranches and row and hay crops.

“Anyone who is engaged in agriculture can come in and apply for them,” she added. “We have pretty good participation from grape growers. Vineyards tend to watch their irrigation water management closely. They usually have up-to-date systems and cover crops to reduce erosion.”

Steve Peck, J. Lohr’s winemaker, will address the process for choosing fruit and elements for mutually beneficial grower-winemaker relationships. The seminar is free to members and $20 for others. For reservations, call 434-3331 or email terri@precisionagconsulting.com.

The growers group will also hold a barbecue dinner at Rio Seco Winery, 1294 Union Road in Paso Robles, at 6 p.m. June 16.
