SLO High grad Jeff Powers scores two goals as U.S. ends 10-year losing streak to Olympic gold medal winners

San Luis Obispo High graduate Jeff Powers scored twice to help the U.S. national water polo team end a 10-year drought against an international power in a pre-Olympic tuneup at Newport Harbor High School on Sunday.

Powers scored two goals, teammate Tony Azevedo scored a game-high six goals and Team USA won a rematch of the 2008 Olympic final with a 12-9 victory over Hungary, which it hadn’t beaten since 2002.

Powers scored the first goal of the game less than two minutes into the first period, following up a missed shot. Powers scored again with 33 seconds left in the period to stretch the lead to 5-2.
