Cambria’s choice

Steve Figler’s letter (May 10, “Who will choose whom?”) needs a footnote. Mr. Figler correctly points out that the Cambria Community Services District board has desired a desalination plant for over 20 years. But he makes it sound like it has been a single hard-headed group that has been stuck in this position that whole time.

It must be remembered here that there have been 10 elections over this same 20-year period. Those elections have brought a diverse group onto the board, most of whom have come and gone over the period.

Many of them were elected on anti-desal planks, yet when they took their seats on the board and actually became aware of all the options and impacts, they came to support desal.

We lot owners never asked for desal. We don’t get a vote. It has always been a local idea. All we want is for the local community to get behind a plan and stick with it. No more starting over. Forty years is long enough to study one problem. Deryl Robinson

Rock on, Gussie

In a time when we are so bogged down with the cost of things, my daughter, with one of her school assignments, reminded me of the old quote, “He knows the price of everything, and the value of nothing.” A second-grade student from Cambria Grammar School, she wrote a letter to someone she loved. As you can see by her letter, often children can remind us of the important things. I think many of your readers might enjoy it. It follows as it was written by her hand:

“Dear Gussie,

“You’ve always been my favorite friend, ever sence I’ve got you. I bet you miss your mother. But don’t you cry. You are like a sister to me. I wouldn’t sell you for a million dollars. You are my very first dog. You know, dogs are my favorite animal! I always knew we were going to get a dog. I love Golden Retrievers, (espesily ones that are cute and fluffy and that are named Gussie.) Which is a perfect example of you. My favorite thing in the whole entire world (no offense to Mom and Dad) is you, Gussie. If I was a dog, I would defenetly choose to be you. You’re a rock star Gussie! You shine so that everyone can see you. You’re so famous to Cambria that you could be on a map of Cambria. I remember when you were on the ranch for the very first time. You were so excited! I remember when I said, ‘You have got to see Gussie on the giant pile of woodchips, Mom.’ I have never seen a dog so beautiful and fluffy and smart in my life, and when you grow up, I know you’ll have beautiful babies. I love you. “From, Eithne.”

Celebrating education

The Cambria Education Foundation hosted its ninth annual Celebration of Education on Friday, May 11, awarding 24 grants to Coast Unified School District teachers for creative education opportunities and support for career development. Beloved retirees were honored who among them have over 130 years of accumulated service to our school district.

The Cambria Education foundation believes that healthy schools are vital to a healthy community, and this celebration is about our community and the wonderful way in which it supports our students and teachers. Without incredible generosity from these providers, events such as our Celebration of Education wouldn’t be possible.

We would like to thank the Linn family, author David Allen Ibsen, musicians Jim Chalifoux and Scott Wright, Cambria Nursery & Florist, Adelaida Cellars, Bassetti Vineyards, Cayucos Cellars, Cambria Beer Company, Harmony Cellars, Hearst Ranch Winery and Moonstone Cellars for their generosity. Please join us in thanking these businesses that have gone above and beyond to support our schools.

The Cambria Education Foundation would also like to thank our Cambria community for their donations throughout the year or attending one of our events such as Movie Night at Hearst Castle Theater in November and the 18th annual Cambria Garden Tour on Saturday, May 19. Profits from these events support grants for our teachers.

Cambria delivers

The postal food drive Saturday, May 12, successfully collected 2,500 pounds of food. My thanks go to my co-workers for their time and effort, The Cambrian for helping to get the word out, the Vineyard Christian Church for storing and distributing the food and, most of all, to the generous people of Cambria for their donations.
