Heading into the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 playoffs, the San Luis High boys tennis team leaned on its strength: depth.
With Brooks Rossi winning two of thee sets at the No. 3 singles spot, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, the Tigers used that strength to defeat West Ranch 11-7 on Wednesday, clinching a spot in the second round.
That was key for us, San Luis Obispo coach Ken Peet said. I am really happy with how we played. We know our team has depth, and we won eight of nine doubles sets.
San Luis Obispos top two doubles team swept against West Ranch. Mason Hansen and Adrian Angulo won 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, while Zach Hutkin and Josh Milla swept 6-2, 6-1, 6-0.
The Tigers (13-5) will host Santa Monica, the divisions No. 2 overall seed or Hoover on Friday at 3 p.m.
BASEBALL
Arroyo Grande 3, Paso Robles 2
Cameron Petetit hit the go-ahead RBI, his second of the game, in the top of the sixth inning, and the Eagles defeated the Bearcats.
Gunnar Gomez went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Arroyo Grande (13-11, 10-7 PAC 7).
Kyle Brown pitched all seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
T.J. Durfee had three hits and an RBI for Paso Robles (15-10, 11-6).
San Luis Obispo 13, St. Joseph 0
Davis Casciola pitched a complete-game shutout, giving up two hits to go with seven strikeouts.
Garrett Giovannelli went 3 for 4 with three runs scored, and R.J Hassey went 2 for 4 with three RBI for San Luis Obispo (20-6, 16-1 PAC 7), which has already clinched the PAC 7 title.
Righetti 20, Atascadero 3
Atascaderos Wade Daugherty went 2 for 3 in the loss to the Warriors.
Matt Cuen went 1 for 3 for Atascadero (7-19, 3-13 PAC 7), and Michael Baez went 1 for 4 with a double.
