Five SLO County residents headed to Democratic National Convention in Sept.

Published: May 5, 2012

Five local Democrats will travel to Charlotte, N.C., in early September to cast their votes at the Democratic National Convention for the re-election of President Barack Obama.

Cory Black of Atascadero, Lori Caudill of Los Osos and Susan Devine and Pat Harris of San Luis Obispo were elected to be delegates at an April 29 caucus of the local Democratic Party. Ellen Pitrowski was elected as an alternate and also will attend.

The local Democrats will be part of a total of 547 California delegates and 46 alternates in Charlotte.

The convention begins Sept. 3 with a Labor Day celebration at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and will culminate Sept. 6 with Obama’s acceptance of the nomination.

More than 35,000 delegates, media and special guests are expected to attend and more than 1,000 separate events are planned.

Devine, vice-chair of the SLO County Democratic Party, called being a delegate a “once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s something I’ve always dreamed of doing.”
