A 1-year-old girl suffered major injuries when she was hit by a car in Cambria at about 10:20 a.m. Tuesday.
The child reportedly had a skull fracture, punctured lung, facial abrasions and a hematoma on the left side of her head. She was taken by ambulance to the Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center Trauma Center, then transferred to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
According to a preliminary CHP report, the cars driver, 31-year-old Ashley Mokihana Romero of Cambria, had parked her 2005 Chevy Aveo facing west on the shoulder of the 900 block of Sheffield Drive, east of Hartford Street.
As she talked with relatives in the area, the report said, the baby apparently came out of the house and, unnoticed by anyone, was in front of the car when Romero started to drive away. The car only moved about 3 feet, according to the CHP, but it was enough for its right front tire to roll completely over Jasmine Romero, the niece of the driver.
