Climate experts agree

In the April 19 edition you published a letter from Peter Zobian under the headline “Global warming refuted,” which stated that a letter was written by “40 top NASA scientists and astronauts” to NASA management stating their position that “there is NO scientific evidence that carbon emissions cause any man-made climate changes or global warming.”

Mr. Zobian failed to mention that, of the 49 signers of this letter, not a single one is identified as a climate scientist. In fact, virtually all are identified as having other specialties not related in any way to climate science. This is analogous to consulting a proctologist for advice about your upcoming brain surgery.

Mr. Zobian also failed to mention that this letter was organized by Leighton Steward, chairman of Plants Need CO2, a nonprofit group with ties to the coal industry. Mr. Steward has previously served in top management positions with several oil and gas exploration companies.

In fact, more than 98 percent of climate scientists agree that the obvious climate change that is occurring is man-made.

Paying music forward

What a fantastic memorial to Red Holloway on April 22 — exactly the way he would have wanted. If you weren’t there, you missed the greatest talent show, with some of the finest musicians in our county sending Red off with jazz as it was meant to be, loving words, memories and lots of laughs.

Richard Stacy, who was the catalyst for the memorial celebration, and Jim Conroy, who coordinated the musicians, deserve kudos and appreciation for planning this great celebration. So do Steve Crimmel, who donated all of his time and equipment and developed the opening CD of Red Holloway addressing the guests, and Mike Schimberg, who was in charge of set up and overseeing the event.

We of the Cambria Youth Music Fund are so grateful and thrilled that we were chosen by Richard, because he knew that Red wanted the children to have music in their lives, to be the recipients of the love, caring and generosity of our citizens of Cambria and the county who so generously showed their love of Red with their generous monetary donations to our longtime mission of giving music lessons of every kind to our talented, dedicated youth of Cambria who need our financial help. Donations coming in to the fund as a result of the event for Red now total $1,653.50.

The Lions Club of Cambria and the Cambria Chorale are the wind beneath the wings of the Music Fund, supplying us the ability to be tax deductible and giving the ticket sales proceeds of the Chorale concerts to us to pay for lessons for the children.

We are so very grateful for all donations we receive all year. We are in our 17th year and have had well over 65 students and are supporting 17 at the present time.

Rising to the challenge

A big thanks to all who helped at Santa Lucia Middle School’s Warrior Challenge Day! On Friday, April 27, Santa Lucia Middle School held its annual Warrior Challenge Day. It is a combination of traditional Field Day Events like running, softball throw and rope climb, mixed with team-building activities that promote a cooperative environment. Students are placed onto one of six different teams at the beginning of their sixth-grade year and compete for points all year long.

This year we saw several school records broken which was exciting to see and be a part of. Some of the records have been held since 1983.

I would like to thank Paul Duston of Duston Construction for donating many hours of time to build us six balance beams and tile puzzle pieces for the days’ events; Cambria Hardware & Lumber for donating two sheets of ¾-inch CDX plywood and offering a discount on many other supplies needed for the day; and Danny Cashdan of Personal Touch Woodworks for donating two sheets of ¼-inch MDF plywood and the use of his shop. Without these generous donations, we would not have had the opportunity to experience some innovative new elements to our day. I would also like to thank all of the parents who came out to help and cheer on the athletes of Santa Lucia Middle School do their best. And, lastly, all of the teachers who helped with measuring and timing events for the day, especially my co-worker Karen Howard. She is an integral part of putting on this great event.
