One person died Wednesday night in a collision involving a Mercedes sedan and an RTA bus on South Bay Boulevard between Los Osos and Morro Bay, according to the CHP.
Shortly after 9:10 p.m., the Route 13 Regional Transit Authority bus and the car collided about a mile north of Turri Road, CHP Officer Darrell Mackinga said, and the bus ended up in the Morro Bay Estuary beside the road. Mackinga said a witness driving behind the Mercedes told authorities the sedan was northbound when it started to drift over the center line; the driver corrected, then came back again into the southbound lane and collided head-on with the bus.
The bus, carrying four passengers in addition to the driver, went down the embankment. There were significant injuries, the CHP said. The bus driver and at least one passenger were taken to the hospital. One or two bus passengers were able to walk away.
The Mercedes driver was killed on impact. The driver was male and likely in his 60s. There was no obvious indication of alcohol and drugs, the CHP said. Although it was raining at the time, the CHP said speed and weather were not factors.
Crews expected to work through the night clearing the scene. They were working to take the body out of the car two hours after the accident. After the body is extricated, two tow trucks will be used to take the bus away, the CHP said.
Traffic was blocked off on both sides of South Bay Boulevard and was being directed back to Highway 1 and Los Osos Valley Road. Shortly before midnight, officials said it would be at least two hours until traffic was restored.
