A music recital Sunday, April 29, will show how music education made possible by the sponsorship of the Cambria Chorale and the support of the Cambria Lions Club has nurtured the talents of Cambria Youth Music Fund scholarship students.

The recital begins at 2 p.m. at Cambria Community Presbyterian Church, 2250 Yorkshire Drive. A reception will follow the performance. Tickets, $5, are on sale at the Cambria Chamber of Commerce, 767 Main St.; the Joslyn Recreation Center, 950 Main St.; and at the door. Students 18 and under are admitted free.

Past performances have been greeted with great enthusiasm and have received rave reviews from audiences. The recital showcases the musical achievements of these talented students:

Voice — Karina Ochoa, 14; Lindy Ortiz, 13; Madison Scott, 15; Tiffany Stephens, 15; and Cesar Viveros, 15

Piano — Ethan Hoffman, 9; Karis Lawson, 10; Samuel Light, 13; Carlos Plummer, 10; Heartlinne Warnell, 16; and William Warnell, 15.

Trumpet — Eric Brunschwiler, 17.

Violin — Kyle Plummer, 15.

Drums — Lalo Garcia, 13.

Guitar — Sage Friedman, 11; Alexis Mireles, 13; and Robert Quintero, 14

A highlight of the recital will be presentation to one of the students of the 2012 Jim Fitzgerald Award for Outstanding achievement in Music. The late Jim Fitzgerald was a much-loved member of this community, as choir director at Cambria Presbyterian Church for 10 years and the Cambria Chorale for six years.

Past recipients have been Cody Pettit, Dorothy Fitzgerald, Erik Vega, Sarah Wright and Eric Brunschwiler. Presenting the award this year will be Emily Fitzgerald, Jim’s grandaughter.

The Cambria Chorale has long been a principal supporter of the Cambria Youth Music Fund, headed by Arla Stevens and Lela Mulligan. The Cambria Lions Club provided the seed money 18 years ago to start the fund and continues to be a supporter. A large portion of the net proceeds from the Chorale’s Spring Concert and this recital go toward providing music lessons for students who show talent in vocal or instrumental music, and need financial assistance to continue with their musical training. Private donations assist in the effort.

Students have received high marks from their music teachers and broadened their horizons by participating in school productions and special events in the community. In March, four students performed in the widely acclaimed Coast Union High School production of “Wizard of Oz.”

Teachers for the students, some of whom have been with the program since its inception, are: Ruth Fleming, voice; Valerie Tacker, piano; Emily Fitzgerald, piano; Deborah Swanson, piano; Jim Chalifoux, guitar; Adam Vonweerdenpoelman, drums; Jerry Boots, trumpet; and Don Charles, violin.
