Sex offender arrested after failing to report that he lives near school

A 68-year-old sex offender was arrested this week after authorities discovered he was living across the street from an elementary school, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Francis Stanley Costa lived in a home on the 1700 block of Paso Robles Street in Oceano, but he had driven to San Luis Obispo and registered as “transient” with the Police Department there, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Costa allegedly admitted to the false report, saying that he didn’t register his address in Oceano because it was too close to an elementary school, in violation of laws regarding sex offenders.

“The school was, in fact, located directly across the street from Costa’s home,” the news release said.

Costa had a prior conviction for attempting a lewd act on a child younger than 14.

He was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender and remains in custody in County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail, according to the County Jail website.
