An 84-year-old Cayucos man was hit by a car and killed early Thursday while he was walking along Highway 1 and Ocean Avenue north of Cayucos.

According to CHP Officer J.W. Townsen, Matilde Real-Bustos, 42, of Nipomo was driving a 2012 Toyota Camry north in the fast lane at 6:12 a.m. when she approached the highway’s intersection with Ocean Avenue. A pickup truck was in the slow lane right behind her.

It was at that moment, in early morning darkness, that George Ralph Vianello walked into the path of Real-Bustos, Townsen said.

She braked and veered to the right to miss Vianello, but struck him with her car’s left front.

According to Townsen, Vianello died on impact; Real-Bustos was uninjured.

There was no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident, which remains under investigation.
