Large boulder blocks Highway 1

Published: March 29, 2012

A truck-sized boulder crashed down on Highway 1 near Big Sur Wednesday morning, March 28, Caltrans said, and as a result the scenic highway was closed in both directions.

The big rock, the size of a pickup, came down just south of where work crews have been working on securing a rock-slide-prone hillside.

Fittingly, the area is called Rain Rocks, and is about 2 miles south of the Monterey County coastal spot known as Lucia.

Workers began attempting to remove other loose debris, and a Caltrans “geotech” crew was called in to check out the boulder and determine how best to remove it. There was no estimated time for reopening the highway. Businesses north and south of the area remain open. — Tad Weber
