College Roundup: Cuesta men's basketball team beats Chaffey in playoffs

Calen Coleman and Malte Kramer combine for 38 points as Cougars win second-round playoff game

Staring at a 19-point deficit with 18 minutes left in Cuesta’s playoff game against Chaffey, head coach Rusty Blair stared his team in the face.

“Is this it? Is our season over?” Blair asked.

No, it wasn’t, they responded.

After going on a 22-2 run in the second half, the Cuesta men’s basketball team (24-7) defeated Chaffey 74-68 in the second round of the CCCAA Southern California Regional playoffs, keeping their season alive for at least one more game.

“Calen Coleman and Malte Kramer took over,” Blair said. “We just made the big runs with our two all-league players.”

Coleman scored a team-high 21 points for Cuesta, the Northern Division Western State conference champions, and Kramer added 17.

“It just seems we always come back, fight and pull those games out,” Blair said. “We’re very happy with the win today, kind of surprising.”

The Cougars outrebounded Chaffey 38-29, led by Coleman and Malte, who had eight rebounds apiece.

BASEBALL Cal Poly 9, Loyola Marymount 1

Joey Wagman earned his second win of the season, striking out four and walking three in the Mustangs’ victory over the Lions.

Wagman, who pitched eight scoreless innings last week against Oklahoma State, did not allow his first run of the season until the sixth inning.

The Mustangs (4-1) jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with RBI singles from Mitch Haniger and David Armendariz.

Cal Poly opened up a seven-run lead with four runs in the seventh inning. Ryan Drobny singled to score the first run, a throwing error brought in the second, and Jimmy Allen capped the rally with his second career home run.

Cuesta 3, Saddleback 2

Lee Sheller went 2 for 3 with an RBI, as Cuesta combined for 10 hits to defeat Saddleback.

Cuesta raced out to a quick 1-0 lead after the top of the first, before Saddleback tied it in the bottom of the inning. The Cougars (9-3) then scored one run in the fifth and sixth en route to the win.

Cody Lavalli went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, and Josh Miller also went 2 for 4.

SOFTBALL Boise State 7, Cal Poly 1

The Mustangs (1-5) scored in the bottom of the first inning on a walk but were no-hit in an opening-game loss at the Cathedral City Classic.

Cuesta 9, Hartnell 5

Kryn Masutani was 2 for 4 with three RBI, Chelsea Lelito was 2 for 5 with a double and three runs scored, and the Cougars (3-8) won on the road.

Kelsey Paulus pitched four innings and allowed two runs in relief to pick up the win for Cuesta.

Alyssa Reynoso was 2 for 4 with two RBI, a double and one run scored for the Cougars, who blew the game open with a six-run fifth inning.
