  How to ‘delight’

  PG&E’s new CEO wants to “delight me.” Hah! The Viewpoint on Jan. 29 voicing concerns over PG&E’s safety seminars should make everyone in the disaster zone leery of anything that comes out of their spokespersons’ mouths.

  “The earthquake modeling software cannot link faults,” they say. Seriously? How can PG&E, with any degree of honesty and integrity, come out and say the plant was built to withstand any significant event the surrounding faults can produce, when software models only one single fault at a time? What would delight me is for PG&E to withdraw license extension requests and shut down the plant.

  When I was in college, about 40 years ago, I thought the Sierra Club was the greatest thing.

  I was and still am all for conservation of wilderness and wildlife habitat restoration. I like camping, backpacking, remember “Just leave a footprint?” That’s what the Sierra Club was all about. It was the club of John Muir.

  In late November 2011, PG&E sponsored a three-day public workshop on seismic safety issues for the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant. The workshop brought together PG&E technical staff, their paid consultants and government earth scientists, all of whom are working on various aspects of PG&E’s ongoing seismic hazard assessment of Diablo Canyon, to share their research results.

  As a concerned San Luis Obispo resident with a geologic background, I attended a portion of the conference to get an overview of what has been accomplished to date. My goal was to distill down the diverse technical information presented into a few main takeaway points from the conference, and share these with the local community. I left the conference feeling less secure about living within 10 miles of Diablo Canyon than I did beforehand.

  Acknowledging that the company’s reputation is “in tatters,” PG&E’s new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Anthony Earley announced Thursday the utility will spend $400 million in shareholder money over the next two years to improve its electrical and natural gas infrastructure.

  After the Fukushima accident, the Diablo Canyon Power Plant staff conducted extensive reviews of procedures, and both process and physical upgrades were made.

  With the one-year anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan and the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, questions understandably continue to emerge about the safety of all nuclear facilities.

  While officials at PG&E want to assure the public that its Diablo Canyon Power Plant is safe and secure, they also insist that much was learned from what happened at Fukushima on March 11, 2011, and afterward. There always has been — and will continue to be — an ongoing effort to maximize and improve safety at the plant in San Luis Obispo County.
