Cal Fire is creating a fuel break west of Atascadero to reduce the threat of wildfire.
The agency has awarded a contract to mulch 61 acres of hazardous vegetation where wild land and the urban area meet adjacent to Atascadero, according to Vincent ONeal, Cal Fires regional hazardous fuels treatment program manager.
Money for the project comes from a USDA Forest Service hazardous fuels treatment grant.
Work began last week and will be conducted during times when ground and weather conditions are suitable, according to a news release from ONeal. He said conditions on the ground will be carefully monitored to ensure natural resource protection.
This fuel modification project reflects Cal Fires commitment to reducing fuels threatening the forests, range lands, and communities of the Central Coast, ONeal wrote. This is a great opportunity to establish some strategically placed projects that can be used to reduce the threat of wildfire in these areas.
