  The week is off to a stormy start, but the unsettled weather is not likely to produce much rain.

  A few light rain showers fell on parts of San Luis Obispo on Monday as a storm system moved in from the north. A tenth of an inch of rain is the most the storm was expected to deliver, said John Lindsey, a community relations specialist and experienced weather forecaster with PG&E.

  The storm brought with it lower temperatures. Highs are expected to stay in the 50s for the next couple of days, according to the National Weather Service.

  A freeze watch for coastal sections of San Luis Obispo County has been issued by the National Weather Service for tonight and early Friday.

  The weather service says temperatures could drop into the mid-to-upper 20s along the coast from Lompoc to Cambria.

  “A freeze watch means subfreezing temperatures are possible,” the National Weather Service said. “Measures should be taken to protect sensitive crops and vulnerable animals should be kept indoors in a barn or similar structure.”

  Poppies are already blooming along South Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo, thanks to recent warm weather and clear skies.

  After a clear, cool start today, skies will be sunny countywide, with highs in the upper 60s in the North County and San Luis Obispo.

  A cold front will move over the county tonight, leaving behind partly cloudy skies and windy conditions Saturday, forecasters say. Another cold front expected Sunday night might bring drizzle and scattered showers.

  Light snow dusted the hills east of Cambria after a weekend storm that moved through the Central Coast.

  With the vernal equinox marking the start of spring at 10:14 p.m. today, the region is experiencing some of the most unsettled weather of the winter, according to longtime local forecaster John Lindsey of PG&E.

  Snow levels dropped below 2,400 feet as cold, moist and very unstable air behind Saturday’s low-pressure system, combined with gale-force winds at 32 to 46 mph, brought scattered showers (at times heavy), hail and a chance of thunderstorms, said Lindsey, a communications specialist at the utility.

  Weather forecasters are warning of unusually strong winds starting today and lasting through Friday.

  A cold front, coupled with an area of high pressure over the Pacific, will produce winds as powerful as 60 mph. The National Weather Service is warning of unsafe marine conditions and an elevated fire danger.

  “Batten down the hatches!” PG&E meteorologist John Lindsey said. “One of the strongest northwesterly wind events that I’ve seen is expected to develop along the coastline (today) through Friday.”
