Cal Fire officials are urging locals to lock their vehicles after two car fires and several car burglaries in Nipomo in recent days.
Authorities are searching for the person who started car fires on Division Street and Alegre Avenue early Sunday morning.
Though nothing appears to have been taken from the burned vehicles, burglaries of cars have taken place in the same area over the past week, said Jane Schmitz, a Cal Fire captain.
Schmitz believes that in both vehicle fires, which caused a small amount of damage to each car, the doors were left open.
These appear to be fires of opportunity, Schmitz said. Without the opportunity of an unlocked door, people would be deterred from this type of crime.
