The Cal Poly womens basketball team defeated Cal State Fullerton 66-48 on Saturday, pulling within one-half game of first place in the Big West Conference standings.
Kristina Santiago recorded her 12th double-double of the season for the Mustangs (11-12, 7-3 Big West) recording game-highs in points, with 17, and rebounds, with 10. Jonae Ervin, the NCAA leader in assist-to-turnover ratio, added 10 points and eight assists.
Ashlee Burns and Kayla Griffin each scored nine points for Cal Poly.
After taking a 29-20 lead into halftime, the Mustangs increased the lead to as much as 22 in the second half.
Lauren Bushong led the Titans (9-15 2-10) with 12 points off the bench. Alex Thomas scored 11, also off the bench.
L.A. Pierce 77, Cuesta 75
The Cougars (13-12, 5-5 Western State Conference) fell on the road to the Brahmas (11-16, 4-7 WSC) despite Alyssa Palmas 23 points and double-doubles from Aria Johnson and Katie Sheldon.
Johnson, averaging just below 10 points a game, scored 15 and pulled down 10 rebounds. Sheldon had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Rachael Warner added 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field.
Cuesta struggled from outside, shooting just 2 for 9 from 3-point range.
The Cougars held a 38-36 lead at the half.
MENS BASKETBALL
Cuesta 69, Los Angeles Pierce 65
Mark Hopkinson scored 15 points, Sofian MRad had 10 points and 13 rebounds, eight on the offensive end, and the Cougars (21-7, 9-1 WSC) remained in first place with a victory on the road.
The Cougars led by as many as 15 in the second half.
BASEBALL
Cuesta 6, Cañada 2; Cuesta 9, Cañada 8, 10 innings
LaBronze Sanderson went 6 for 8 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored as the Cougars rallied late for an extra-innings win in the nightcap to sweep the visiting Colts.
In the opener, Carson Aprato gave up two hits and struck out nine in the complete-game win for Cuesta (4-3). Cody Lavalli was 2 for 4 with three RBI, and Lee Sheller was 1 for 4 with a two-run double.
In the nightcap, Cuesta trailed 8-6 in the bottom of the ninth when Sanderson connected on an RBI triple for the Cougars before scoring the tying run on a Jack Colick single.
After Cuesta held Cañada scoreless in the top of the 10th, Josh Miller hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning, scoring Chris Lindmark from third and winning the game for Cuesta.
SOFTBALL
Georgia Tech 8, Cal Poly 5
The Mustangs (0-3) fell to the Yellow Jackets (3-0) in the third game of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., Cal Polys third straight loss to open the season.
Kim Westlund was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Nora Sobczak was 1 for 3 with two RBI for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly trailed 7-0 after the third inning.
MENS TENNIS
Cal Poly 6, San Francisco 0
No. 22-ranked Andre Dome defeated William Schumacher, 6-1, 6-2 to lead the Mustangs (4-3) to a sweep of the Dons in their home opener.
Brian McPhee won 6-3, 6-3, Marco Comuzzo won 6-1, 6-0, Jordan Bridge won 6-3, 6-2, Jurgen de Jager won 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) and Sebastian Bell won 6-4, 6-2 for Cal Poly.
WOMENS TENNIS
Cal Poly 5, San Jose State 2
The Mustangs (4-1) dominated the Spartans at home behind Alexa Lee and Jocelyn Davis.
Lee defeated Sabi Leon Chao 6-2, 6-2 and Davis defeated Chau Truong 6-3, 7-5 as Cal Poly took four of six singles matches.
In doubles, Davis and Lee partnered to defeat Leon Chao and Erica Medlin 8-5, leading a doubles sweep for the Mustangs. Gabby Gatewood and Jen Cornea won 9-7, and Ane McPike and Kathryn Webb won 8-2.
WRESTLING
Cal Poly at National Duals
The Mustangs placed fifth at the NWCA National Duals meet, defeating host Rutgers 24-22 following a 34-6 loss to Missouri.
Against Missouri, Cal Polys only winners were Boris Novachkov (141 pounds), with a 6-4 decision over Nicholas Hucke, and Dominic Kastl (165), with a 3-1 overtime decision over Zach Toal.
Ryan DesRoches (174) fell in a close 3-2 decision to Dorian Henderson.
In its next match, Cal Poly (6-7) won the first three bouts to jump out to a 12-0 advantage.
Britain Longmire (125) won by forfeit, Jake Tanenbaum (133) won 8-4 and Novachkov edged William Ashnault 1-0 in overtime to give the Mustangs their 12-0 lead.
Rutgers won three late bouts to take a 22-21 lead, but Kelan Bragg (285) clinched the match and the fifth-place finish for Cal Poly with a 3-2 victory over Daniel Hopkins.
