Cambrians, through a variety of nonprofit community services, will benefit to the tune of more than $39,000 distributed by the Cambria Community Council Board of Directors Tuesday, Jan. 31.
The funds were largely collected during the annual Open Heart appeal and an occasional bequest and the distribution was based on the merits of submitted grants as reviewed by the council board in an early January meeting.
Grant applications are solicited through articles in the Cambrian and email contacts with previous grantees in the fall of each year and reviewed individually by the council board.
At the Annual Open Heart appeal donors may choose where their donation is to be directed or allow the donation to be applied to a general fund for distribution. Donations are received throughout the year at P.O. Box 486, Cambria, Ca, 93428.
Children and teens will especially benefit from grants to the Cambria Education Foundation, the Assistance League, which provides clothing for needy students, the Cambria Grammar School 4th grade trip to Rancho El Chorro and 5th grade trip to Yosemite, the Santa Lucia Middle School trip to San Francisco, the YMCA after school programs, the Cambria Youth Athletic Association, the Teen Center, Girl Scouts, Special Olympics and Toys for Tots.
Also receiving checks were the Cambria Library, Friends of the Cambria Library, HART, CARES, Senior Nutrition, Camp Ocean Pines, Friends of the Fiscalini Ranch. North Coast Ocean Rescue and CERT. They will be able to provide better service as a result of grants received at the meeting.
The Community Council’s prime responsibility is operation and maintenance of the Community Bus, which is operated by volunteer drivers who will be recognized at the annual Drivers Breakfast on Feb. 16.
Potential grantees and the public are invited to the annual meeting and election of officers on May 7, 7 p.m. at Rabobank. For information, please call the council president at 927-9460.
