  Atascadero police Sgt. Joe Allen was promoted to the rank of police commander Monday, according to a statement from the city.

  The move follows a lengthy search for candidates inside and outside the department, officials said. Steve Gesell, who served as acting police chief in Atascadero for much of 2011, previously held the department’s commander position before becoming the San Luis Obispo Police Department’s police chief in January.

  Allen has worked with Atascadero police since 1995 after serving with the Monrovia Police Department for about four years. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2001 to supervise the department’s detective unit and work on investigations.

  An Atascadero man, who at one point brandished an ice pick and later a machete according to police, held authorities in a nearly 15-hour standoff from his barricaded home that ultimately ended in his surrender Thursday afternoon.

  “It seems anti-climactic, but it’s the best outcome possible because no one was harmed,” Atascadero police Chief Jerel Haley said.

  At about 2:20 p.m. Thursday, the man surrendered without incident after San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s deputies coaxed him from the home. Authorities remained on scene into Thursday evening to evaluate the home and clear it of tear gas and other items related to the incident.

  The Paso Robles Police Department is searching for a man who reportedly stole an envelope of cash from a person at Sixth and Park streets today, according to a report from the department’s alert service, Nixle.com.

  Police received a report that a robbery occurred at about 12:40 p.m. today after a “transient-looking white male” wearing a dirty white sweater and dark-blue jeans approached a person asking for money.

  The robber then “pushed the victim in the chest and took an envelope containing a large amount of cash,” police said in the alert. Details such as the amount of money taken and the exact location of the robbery weren’t immediately available.
