College Roundup: Happy homecoming for Cuesta baseball

Jordan Goldsmith took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as Cuesta College defeated Riverside 9-0 on Wednesday for its first baseball win of the season in its home opener.

Goldsmith finished with four strikeouts, giving up one walk and two hits in eight shutout innings.

The Cougars’ Lee Sheller was 3 for 4 with a double, two RBI and one run, while Chris Lindmark batted 2 for 3 with a triple, one RBI and three runs scored.

Cuesta (1-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, with a pair of early RBI from Sheller and Lindmark, and spread its lead to five by the fourth inning.

Goldsmith went 5 1⁄3 innings without allowing a hit before the Tigers’ Brandon Van Horn got on base with a single.

In the ninth inning Sean Mullen replaced Goldsmith and loaded the bases with a single and two walks before Riverside’s Seth Weltson hit into a double play to end the game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Poly 95, Bakersfield 78

The Mustangs (10-12) shot a season-high 64 percent from the field and limited the Roadrunners to 39 percent shooting in their victory at Bakersfield.

Four Cal Poly players scored in double figures with Kristina Santiago leading the way with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Kayla Griffin added a career-high 20 points, Ashlee Burns scored 14 and Ervin Jonae tallied 10 points and nine assists.

Cal Poly took its first double-digit lead with eight minutes remaining in the first half with a layup from Griffin for a 23-12 advantage. In the second half, Bakersfield made only nine of 33 field-goal attempts despite forcing 10 Cal Poly turnovers.

Santiago gave the Mustangs their largest lead of the night at 87-62 with a free throw with less than four minutes to go.

FOOTBALL

Four Mustangs makes all-academic team

Cal Poly football players Brandon Roberts, Matt Sullivan, Keaton Taylor and Kyle Mohamed were named to the Great West Conference All-Academic Team for the 2011 season.

Roberts is a forestry and natural resources major, Sullivan majors in agricultural business, and Taylor and Mohamed are construction management majors.

In total, 48 players were named to the all-Great West Conference academic team based on a minimum cumulative 3.2 grade-point average, and all athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of their team’s games.

MEN'S TENNIS

Dome Earns Player of the Week

Cal Poly’s No. 22-ranked Andre Dome was chosen as the Big West Conference player of the week after leading the Mustangs to a pair of victories over Arizona and Grand Canyon.

Dome defeated Arizona’s Giacomo Miccini 6-1, 6-1 and Grand Cranyon University’s Frederic Schoelzel 6-3, 6-4. Dome also teamed with Marco Comozzo to earn doubles victories over both the Wildcats and the Antelopes.

Dome improved to 3-1 for the dual season and 9-4 overall.
