  Discard drugs safety

  The members of the San Luis Obispo County Health Commission commend and recognize all seven city police departments and the three sheriff’s substations for their willingness to act as convenient drop off points for Operation Medicine Cabinet. This nonprofit program provides our residents with convenient locations to safely dispose of unwanted medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, at no charge.

  Without question we’ve had a cold winter so far, and it’s in that light that I can’t help but wonder and worry about those who are going without in our community — homeless mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and children. The down-and-outs, the mentally ill, the foreclosed upon whose defense against the elements may only be a bridge over their heads or brush along our creeks.

  There are refuges for these unfortunates: Maxine Lewis Memorial Shelter, ECHO, churches that take monthly turns giving nightly beds to some of the 4,000 homeless individuals in our county.

  These efforts are wonderful examples of empathetic individuals and groups that are simply trying to hold the line against a misery index that most of us, hopefully, will never know.

  Homeless take advantage of ‘powder room’ privilege

  In reading the letter on “Homeless parking” sent by Judith Cadigan (March 1) about religious organizations allowing a few homeless to park their vehicles in the lots for up to a month and urging them to allow the homeless to use the “powder room,” it is obvious to me that Ms. Cadigan has not had to deal with homeless parking or the filth they leave behind.

  As a local business owner, I’ve had to deal with human feces left behind on my property, soiled toilet paper tossed onto my business property, filthy diapers left behind, garbage of all kind disposed of right there where my clients have to walk.

  Un-events are magic

  The letters by William Tuck (“Water Management,” Jan. 23) and Dick Williams (“Winery Traffic,” Jan. 26) on the new Law winery (Jan. 14) recalled a letter of my own prompted by a troublesome reference in the report to winery “events”:

  So, Don Law, in what sounds like a wonderful owner concession to neighborhood peace and tranquility, promises there won’t be any “special events” held at his newly permitted winery and tasting room.

  Plastic bags hold a lot of democracy

  It’s not often that you hear George Washington and his pre-Revolutionary War days in Virginia’s House of Burgesses dropped into a 21st-century government discussion about garbage.

  Come to think of it, George and the Burgesses probably didn’t make it into many 20th-century discussions, either, or those of the century before that.

  But there they were, being summoned at Wednesday’s meeting of the county waste board by a red-faced speaker whose ancestor served with Washington in the House of Burgesses before George became Father of our Country.
