Prep Roundup: Morro Bay clinches a share of LPL girls basketball title

The Morro Bay High girls basketball team clinched at least a tie for its second straight Los Padres League championship Friday night with a 43-38 win over second-place Templeton.

Hannah Gilbert led the Pirates (17-3, 10-0 LPL) with 14 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks, while Sierra Schwellenbach added 13 points and four assists.

Templeton is the only team in the LPL that could join Morro Bay as co-champions, but even if it wins out and Morro Bay loses its final two games, the Pirates would still be the LPL’s top-seeded team in the playoffs.

The Eagles (17-7, 8-2), who suffered a 26-point loss to Morro Bay earlier in the season, held a three-point lead at halftime. But the Pirates took the lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 11-2.

“We made a couple of adjustments at halftime,” Morro Bay coach Cary Nerelli said. “Essentially we were able to hit the shots we had been missing in the first half. We got a little momentum, but Templeton came right back and made it close in the end.”

Behind Lauren Stuedemann (16 points) and Briana Belmonte (10 points), the Eagles trimmed the Pirates lead to five but could not pull ahead.

Atascadero 61, St. Joseph 53

The Greyhounds (15-7, 8-2 PAC 7) took a 20-point lead in the second quarter and held off a late-game comeback to defeat the Knights (7-16, 5-4), who outscored Atascadero 37-25 in the second half.

Atascadero’s Mary Kate Evans led all scorers with 25 points, and Emilie Boege added 10.

Mission Prep 56, Nipomo 40

The Royals outscored the Titans 40-18 in the first half in their victory over Nipomo (4-19).

Jenna Dunbar led Mission Prep (22-1) with 18 points, and Kaylee Williams added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Arroyo Grande 48, San Luis Obispo 43

Heather Madrigal scored 22 points to help the Eagles (18-5, 10-0 PAC 7) maintain their perfect conference record on the road.

Lindsey Wolf scored 10, and Emma Weinreich scored eight for Arroyo Grande.

Jessica Judge led the Tigers (9-13, 2-7 PAC 7) with nine points, and Erica Chandler added eight.

Valley Christian 44, Coastal Christian 22

Roni Garrison and Amy Arnold scored six points apiece for Coastal Christian in the loss to the Lions (15-2, 10-1 CVL).

North Co. Christian 61, Maricopa 25

Brianna Feld broke a school record for career points as the Crusaders (11-2) defeated the Indians (7-8, 6-4) to clinch second place in the Coast Valley League.

Feld’s 16 points was enough to put her at exactly 1,100 career points for North County Christian, breaking a 14-year old record set by Mary Shannon with 1,099 points in 1998.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Mission Prep 61, Nipomo 52

Zach Allmon scored 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Royals (20-4) at home. Andy Rowley and Connor Woolpert added 10 points each for Mission Prep.

Ryan McNeil led the Titans (7-18) with 21 points.

Templeton 59, Morro Bay 33

Andy Garretson scored 24 points, Casey Dakin scored 11 and the Eagles (10-13, 7-3 LPL) cruised on the road.

Luke Munds led the Pirates (15-9, 8-2) with 14 points.

Atascadero 71, St. Joseph 66

Robbie Berwick led the Greyhounds (15-8, 7-5 PAC 7) with a game-high 33 points against the Knights (15-9, 5-4 PAC 7).

Hayden Mislavsky added 18 points for Atascadero.

North Co. Christian 65, Maricopa 31

The Crusaders (9-11, 7-4) clinched third place in the Coast Valley League with their victory over the Indians (2-12, 2-7).

North County Christian’s Daniel Katches had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and the Crusaders led by as many as 28 points in the first half.

BOYS SOCCER

San Luis Obispo 1, Arroyo Grande 1, tie

Trevor James scored for the Tigers (16-1-3, 8-0-1 PAC 7), and Josh Wilkins scored the lone goal for the Eagles (10-10-4, 4-4-2 PAC 7).

Michael Lamberc had eight saves for San Luis Obispo, and Alex Montero had eight saves for Arroyo Grande.

Lydia Mello scored the only goal for the Tigers (15-4-3, 6-2-1 PAC 7). Brady Candaele assisted the goal, and San Luis Obispo’s Lauren Harper had four saves in goal.
