Cuesta College’s baseball team left 11 men on base as it dropped its season opener to Orange Coast 6-3 on Friday in Costa Mesa.
David Murillo started for the Cougars, going 61⁄3 innings and giving up six runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Starting Orange Coast pitcher Brandon Brennan also gave up seven hits, but Cuesta could not find the big bat to bring in runs.

“Murillo did a solid job for us for 61⁄3 innings,” Cuesta assistant coach Casey Belt said. “We got multiple hits by a few guys but left 11 on base. We just couldn’t find that key hit to give us the lead.”
Cougars catcher Michael Nieporte was 2 for 5 with an RBI, and Josh Miller and Alex Detz each went 2 for 4. Cuesta had 11 hits to eight for Orange Coast.
Trailing 6-1 in the ninth inning, the Cougars rallied for two runs but fell short of the comeback.
Despite winning three of the last four matches, the Mustangs (5-6) fell in a non-conference dual at Stanford.
Boris Novachkov (141 pounds) earned a 12-4 decision over Avery Garner to improve his record to 25-2 on the season, and Ryan DesRoches (174) improved his record to 23-1 with a 4-1 decision over Monte Schmalhaus.
Kyle Chen (149), Ryan Smith (197) and Atticus Disney (285) represented the other three wins for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs (3-0) earned the doubles point for the third time in as many matches to defeat the Lions on the road.
The doubles teams of Alexa Lee and Jocelyn Davis won 8-4, Gabby Gatewood and Jen Cornea won 8-2 and Ane McPike and Kathryn Webb won 8-4.
Lee (6-4, 6-4), Davis (6-2, 6-4) and McPike (6-1, 6-2) all swept for Cal Poly in singles.
Seven players, six from California, have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Mustangs for the 2012 campaign.
Cassandra Fassi (Madera, Bullard High), Mikelle Foster (San Jose, Archbishop Mitty), goalkeeper Alyssa Gianetti (Yorba Linda, Esperanza), Elise Krieghoff (Clovis, Buchannan), Robin Mertens (El Cerrito, Albany) and Nicole Wheeler (Saratoga, Archbishop Mitty) make up Cal Poly’s in-state commits, and Lydia Anderson joins the team from Cleveland High in Portland, Ore.
