The boards of two Cambria community districts are to hold a special joint meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday to discuss options for
consolidating some health care and safety services. No formal action is to be taken at the meeting.
Members of the Cambria Community Services District Board of Directors and Cambria Community Healthcare District Board of Trustees are to meet at Rabobank, 1070 Main St., Cambria. The services district provides fire service through the Cambria Fire Department; the healthcare district provides ambulance and other health-related services.
It is the first time the full boards of both agencies have met to discuss the issue, according to Don Melendy, administrator of the
healthcare district.
The meeting is to include a presentation about exploring consolidation by Crabtree Consulting Services on why initial Cambria concepts failed, what new options are open and what the two districts must do to make them succeed.
Muril Clift, a director of the services district, said that one district taking over the other “does not make sense due to the boundary differences and the specialized nature of the authority CCHD has” to collect taxes to support the services provided.
However, the services district could transfer the Cambria Fire Department to the healthcare district, Clift said, and “if the county contracted with CCHD to provide the fire service now contracted to Cal Fire there could be a coordinated fire and emergency medical service for the whole North Coast.”
