The Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers, a nonprofit, has moved from downtown San Luis Obispo into new offices at the historic light station.

They’re in a newly remodeled duplex next to the lighthouse that once housed Coast Guard personnel who staffed the facility before it became fully automated in the 1960s and ’70s.

PG&E, which owns the land surrounding the lighthouse, donated electric trucks and labor for the move Wednesday.

The new location will bolster the lighthouse’s growing role as a meeting place and venue for special events, said Kristi Balzer, public relations manager for the Lighthouse Keepers.

“Everything supplements the maintenance and refurbishing of the lighthouse,” she said. “All the monies stay here — it’s all self-sustaining.”

A new trolley shuttle takes 60 to 90 visitors to the lighthouse every weekend. Additionally, dozens of hikers trek there weekly on the Pecho Coast Trail from Port San Luis.

The remodel of the duplex allows weddings and other larger events to be held at the lighthouse.

The facility has enough room for 80 to 100 people and is also equipped with separate parlors for brides and grooms.

A full kitchen, public restrooms, turnabout and kiosk for the trolleys, a septic system and paved roads are all other new improvements under way.

Since 1995, volunteers with the Lighthouse Keepers have performed more than 70,000 hours of labor restoring the lighthouse to its original 1890 condition.
