Prep Roundup: VanderVeen’s 27 points leads Arroyo Grande to boys basketball win over Atascadero

Brent VanderVeen had 27 points and 17 rebounds, and Matt Willikomm had a big fourth quarter Wednesday night as Arroyo Grande High’s boys basketball team stayed atop the PAC 7 with a 57-50 win at Atascadero.

The Eagles (15-8, 8-1) led 28-20 at halftime, but Atascadero (14-8, 5-4) took a 41-40 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Gunnar Gomez, who scored 16 points and made all five of Arroyo Grande’s 3-pointers, hit a key 3-pointer down the stretch, and Willikomm scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter.

“It was a good game,” Atascadero coach Jerry Tamelier said. “We took the lead in the fourth quarter and they made the plays down the stretch. … It was a really great effort against a good team.”

Atascadero’s Robbie Berwick led all scorers with 24 points. Hayden Mislavsky added 10 for the Greyhounds.

San Luis Obispo 53, Paso Robles 46

Matt Moore scored 17 points and hit a key 3-pointer down the stretch to help the Tigers (11-10, 4-4 PAC 7) hold off the Bearcats.

San Luis Obispo jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter, but Paso Robles (5-15, 1-7) pulled within 38-34 entering the fourth period and cut the lead to three points in the fourth quarter.

But Moore hit a late 3, and Matthew Delmartini hit two jump shots to help San Luis Obispo wrap up the win.

Chandler Torres and Quintin Cortez both scored eight points for the Tigers, and Delmartini added seven.

Paso Robles’ Josh Wilson-Murry led all scorers with 19 points.

Morro Bay 68, Santa Ynez 28

Luke Munds and Edward Griley led Morro Bay (15-8, 8-1 LPL) with 24 points and 15 points, respectively.

Morro Bay took an 11-point lead in the first quarter, and outscored Santa Ynez 19-3 in the fourth quarter.

Santa Maria 58, Nipomo 56

Stephan Lindgren tipped in the game-winning shot at the buzzer as the Saints defeated the Titans (7-15, 4-4 LPL).

Devon Brock led Santa Maria with 16 points, while Ryan McNeil led Nipomo with 17.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Arroyo Grande 61, Atascadero 47

Heather Madrigal and Lindsey Wolf combined for 39 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Eagles (17-5, 8-0 PAC7) to victory over the Greyhounds.

Mary Kate Evans led Atascadero with 15 points, and Casey Nero and Camille LaBlanc each added 11.

Arroyo Grande took an eight-point lead in the first quarter and Atascadero could not trim the deficit.

Paso Robles 39, San Luis Obispo 22

The Bearcats (3-6 PAC7) outscored the Tigers 22-6 in the first half to cruise to victory.

Paso Robles’ Molly Donovan was the lone double-digit scorer for the game with 13 points.

Erica Chandler led San Luis Obispo with nine points.

Morro Bay 48, Santa Ynez 23

Morro Bay (16-3, 9-0 LPL) outscored Santa Ynez 15-3 in the first quarter and never relinquished its lead.

Nikki Machado and Hannah Gilbert led Morro Bay with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Gilbert grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, and Morro Bay’s Sierra Schwellenbach added a game-high five assists.

Nipomo 58, Santa Maria 50

The Titans used a suffocating full-court pressure defense to outscore the Saints 25-8 in the third quarter for the LPL home win.

Tess Latimer scored 14 points for Nipomo (4-17, 4-6 LPL), Missi Ramsey had 12 points and 10 of the Titans’ 25 steals, and Gianna Abatti added 11 points.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Arroyo Grande 12, Paso Robles 1

Katie Svercheck led the Eagles (21-2, 11-0 PAC 7) with six goals as they defeated the Bearcats.

Alexis Elias added three goals for Arroyo Grande, and Eagles goalie Kylie Anderson had seven saves.

BOYS SOCCER

San Luis Obispo 2, Paso Robles 1

Paul Sullivan scored twice to lead the Tigers (16-1-2, 8-0 PAC 7) past the Bearcats.

Sullivan scored in the second minute before Paso Robles’ Angel Guevara tied it 10 minutes later.

But Sullivan scored again, delivering the game winner before the end of the first half.

Jesus Gil had four saves in goal for Paso Robles (11-3-7, 5-2-2), and Michael Lambert had six saves for San Luis Obispo.

Arroyo Grande 2, Atascadero 1, OT

Angel Rodriguez scored the first goal for the Eagles (10-10-2, 4-4-1 PAC7), tying it in the 79th minute before Christian Chora delivered the game-winning goal in overtime.

Eagles goalie Alex Montero had four saves.

San Luis Obispo 1, Paso Robles 0

Kiley Norkus delivered the game-winning goal in the 68th minutes as the Tigers (15-4-3, 5-2-1 PAC 7) defeated the Bearcats.

Brady Candaele assisted the goal.

Goalie Lauren Harper has two saves in her shutout for San Luis Obispo.

Arroyo Grande 5, Atascadero 0

Nadine Reed scored a hat trick in the first half to propel the Eagles (15-7, 7-2 PAC 7) past the Greyhounds.

Carly Chandless and Roxy Harmon each added goals in the second half, and Eagles goalie Paige Johnson had two saves.
