The Pismo Beach City Council may soon begin a search for a new city manager.
Current City Manager Kevin Rice, who was hired in 2004, gave notice that he will leave at the end of his contract on Feb. 28, 2013.

Pismo Beach City Council to discuss search for new city manager
To prepare for a search, the council on Tuesday will discuss forming an advisory subcommittee of two council members to work directly with the city’s human resources officer throughout the recruitment process.
According to a tentative timeline, the city would issue a request for proposals to executive search firms in April and award a contract in June. The council could hold interviews with candidates in October.
The new city manager is expected to start work on Feb. 18 or Feb. 25, 2013. The salary range for the city manager position is currently $142,300 to $172,966.
Rice is out of town this week and was not immediately available for comment.
He came to Pismo Beach after he retired from his position as former commandant of the Presidio of Monterey and president of the Army’s Defense Language Institute.
Previously, he was stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing as the Army attache, from 1997 to 2000. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1973.
Rice’s base salary when he was hired at Pismo Beach was $116,102 annually, said Human Resource Officer Debra Garcia.
Rice currently earns $172,966 a year, the top step in the city’s pay scale. He also receives health benefits, $4,500 per year in deferred compensation, a monthly car allowance of $300 and a monthly phone allowance of $55, Garcia said. Like many other city employees, Rice currently pays 2.86 percent of his retirement contribution, an amount that will increase to 5 percent by the end of a two-year agreement in 2013.
The City Council meeting starts Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at 760 Mattie Road.
